* As People Re-Made: in the wisdom & power of Christ

One Corinthians is a letter to one of the first churches. And in the letter, the apostle, Paul, addresses many troubles of that emerging Christian community, with wisdom that speaks to the church still. The cultural peer pressure-points can seem similar to our own age: Status seeking, higher education, competitive party spirit, class ranking, the role of women, confusion over expressions of sexuality, blurring the boundaries of ethical behavior, and inventing a cult of prosperity. He addresses how these idols gain power in our desiring, and the antidote to that in understanding the apostle’s teaching on the crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus, the Gospel. The multicultural, prosperous, urban, Corinthian culture was very attractive for its temporary benefits. In this situation, Paul asks Jesus’ followers to learn what it means to live by trusting and obeying the Spirit of God, revealed to them through the preaching of the Gospel, and not by the reigning notions of the world in which they are found. 10345_bg

The source of the image is the Acts of the Apostles 18, which tells of Paul coming to Corinth from Athens and lodging with a Jewish couple — Aquila and Priscilla, who had been forced from Rome by the Emperor Claudius — because “he was of the same craft…they were tentmakers.” Priscilla is shown at the spinning wheel, Aquila at the loom, Paul sits at the table and writes of his current situation. A girl sweeps the floor, chickens walk around in the house, and there is other traffic.

This summer 2014 series is a natural next step for North Point EPC as we look to grow in our practice of life in Christ, by further departure from our various idols, through the wisdom and power of the Holy Spirit.
